When Superstition Supersedes

A small town has a community that abides and obeys the local ritual custom to bury their dead.  Eventually this belief passed down through religion, habit, or otherwise will cause a problem for the town. Eventually the town will be pushed up and out when the land for their deceased consumes their town. How long will it take for this practice to become recognizably problematic?
